However, if you’re buying lightweight outerwear that’s only going over a single layer, like a t-shirt or blouse, you don’t have to size up at all.

The best way to figure out your size is to wear a typical outfit and measure yourself fully clothed. These measurements should differ a bit from your natural state and help you figure out whether or not to size up.

When it comes to the traditional silhouette for ladies’ outerwear (this means pieces that aren’t cropped or oversized), you want to look for a few key elements:

The shoulder seam should align with the edge of your natural shoulder
The sleeves should reach to your wrists
The hem should cover your hips and butt
The buttons should close while still providing a full range of motion

If you’re looking for women’s outerwear that can match all your go-to ensembles, you have a couple of choices, including:
